What is De-extinction?

De-extinction is a field of science focused on bringing back extinct species using genetic engineering and advanced biotechnology. The process involves several key steps:

Genome Recovery

Scientists retrieve genetic material from well-preserved remains of extinct species, such as fossils or frozen specimens. This material contains the species' DNA, which serves as a blueprint for its traits and characteristics.

Genetic Reconstruction

The recovered DNA is sequenced and analyzed to reconstruct the complete genome of the extinct species. This involves identifying specific genetic variations that contributed to its unique traits and behaviors.

Genetic Engineering

Using techniques like CRISPR-Cas9, scientists edit the genome of a closely related living species, known as a surrogate, to incorporate the desired genetic traits of the extinct species. This may involve introducing genes responsible for physical features, behaviors, or ecological adaptations.

Embryo Development

The edited genetic material is inserted into reproductive cells or embryos of the surrogate species. These embryos are then implanted into surrogate mothers or grown in artificial wombs to develop into offspring.

Offspring Generation

If successful, the surrogate gives birth to offspring with some traits of the extinct species, often referred to as "de-extinct" individuals. These offspring are raised under controlled conditions for further study and observation.
